The Charles Andrew McLean, Jr. Family

     Ephraim McLean (1730-1823) married Elizabeth Davidson (1734-1820) in North Carolina in about 1761.  He fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain.  They moved from Western North Carolina in the late 1770’s and arrived in Nashville in 1779.  Ephraim was one of the early leaders in the establishment of Nashville serving as the first treasurer of Davidson Academy.  Their son Charles McLean (1771-1825) married Sarah Vance (1780-1847) of North Carolina.  They and their family moved to the Midland community from Maury County in about 1811.  Their son Robert Brank McLean (1823-1899) married Sallie Ann McLean (1827-1909).  They lived in Nashville during their adulthood and had one son, Charles Andrew McLean (1851-1914), who married Lydia Ann Johnson (1860-1947) of Lexington, Kentucky.  Of their six children, Charles Andrew McLean, Sr. (1888-1961) married Elizabeth Norris (Bessie) Hays (1888-1972) of Columbia, Tennessee, on July 12, 1911.  They returned to Shelbyville in about 1915 where he with his brother Thomas Johnson McLean established McLean Bros. and Hutton clothing store on the East side of the Public Square.  Ultimately, he opened C. A. McLean’s Men’s Store on Depot Street.  Following the sale of the store in 1928, he had the opportunity to buy Goggin Truck Line from brothers Jesse and Madison Goggin which he operated until his retirement.

     Charles and Bessie McLean had six children:  Robert Brank McLean (1912-1990) married Elizabeth Reams Carlen (1920-    ); Charles Andrew McLean, Jr. (1914-1982) married Emma Elizabeth Coble (1916-    ); Elizabeth Hays McLean (1915-2000) married Henry Elliot Johnson (1906-1992); Sam Hays McLean (1918-    ) married Victoria Anne Motlow (1920-    ), Thomas Johnson McLean (1921-    ) married Kathryn Audrey Williams (1922-    ); and Margaret Innes McLean (1923-    ) married Julian Foster Lytle, Jr. (1921-1982).

     Nicholas Coble (1759-1838) married Mary Deviney in about 1790.  He fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain.  They moved to Tennessee in the early 1800’s and settled in the Three Forks Church community on a farm that was part of a land grant from the State of North Carolina.  Their son Jacob Coble (1791-1840) married Mary “Polly” Kimbro (1805-1888) and lived on the farm at Three Forks.  Their son, Neely B. Coble, M.D. (1837-1900) married Emma Jane Gilliland (1847-1911) and practiced medicine in Bedford County.  Their son Thomas Jacob Coble, M.D. (1871-1940) married Mabel Louise Holt (1882-1966) on February 18, 1913, and he also practiced medicine in Bedford County.

     Tom and Mabel Coble had two daughters:  Mabel Holt (Holty) Coble (Mrs. James Hugh Capterton, Sr.) and Emma Elizabeth (Libby) Coble who married Charles Andrew (Andy) McLean, Jr. (1914-1982) on August 20, 1937, at the bride’s home.  They both attended public schools in Shelbyville.  Libby attended Virginia Intermont, and they both attended the University of Tennessee. 

     Andy started working with his father at Goggin Truck Line in 1935.  He later bought the business and owned it until his retirement in 1969.  At that time, Goggin was the oldest truck line in Tennessee under continuous family ownership.  He served on a board of the Southern Motor Carriers Rate Conference in Atlanta.  During WWII, he was District Manager of the Office of Defense Transportation in Nashville.  He was a member of the Jaycees and the 37th president of the Shelbyville Rotary Club.  He was a charter member of the Riverbend Country Club and enjoyed golfing and sports.

     Libby was the first public school art teacher in Shelbyville.  She taught for four years before they started a family.  With an avid interest in gardening, she has been a member of the Volunteer Garden Club for nearly forty years and was recently awarded a life membership for her service to the organization.  For most of her adult life, Libby has been a member of the Woman’s Club.  She has been very active in church work, and she and Andy were lifelong members of the First Methodist Church.

     They have three sons:  Charles Andrew McLean, III, (October 18, 1940) who married Nancy Carolyn Ellis from Shelbyville on April 17, 1964.  They have a daughter, Ann Elizabeth McLean (November 1, 1968), and reside in Atlanta.  He is an architect and Carolyn is a retired schoolteacher.  Thomas Coble McLean (June 23, 1943) married Mildred Alice (Mickey) Self from Shelbyville on August 22, 1970, and they have two sons, Benjamin Coble McLean (August 2, 1976) and Thomas Andrew McLean (June 22, 1980) and live in Shelbyville.  Tom is a banker, and Mickey is a schoolteacher.  Robert Willard McLean (September 2, 1947) is in the investment business in Murfreesboro.

     Andy McLean died August 23, 1982, and is buried in Willow Mount Cemetery in Shelbyville.
