The Sam Hays McLean, Sr. Family

           Sam Hays McLean, Sr., fourth child of Charles Andrew McLean, Sr. and Elizabeth Norris Hays was born January 15, 1918.  He attended public school in Shelbyville, attended the University of Kentucky, and graduatedDistinguished Flying Cross from Georgia Tech.  He enlisted in the Aviation Cadet Program of the U.S. Army Air Force, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, and served as a bombardier in the 8th Air Force in the European Theatre of Operations during WWII.  While in the service he was stationed in Peterborough, England, with the 351st Bomb Group that took part in the D-Day operations on June 6, 1944 while his brother, Robert Brank McLean, was landing on the beach below with the 4th Infantry Division.  He received the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, and the European Operations Medal with four Bronze Stars.  He was discharged in May, 1945, to return to civilian life.

Victoria Anne Motlow (September 20, 1920) who grew up in Mulberry served in the WAVES and was stationed in Washington, D.C. during the war. They married on May 25, 1945, in Bethesda, Maryland, where Anne was stationed.

Sam is an architect and practiced in Shelbyville from 1953 until 1993.  He served as president of the Rotary Club as well as president of the Chamber of Commerce.  He was very active in the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects serving in numerous capacities including president.

Sam and Anne had two sons, Sam Hays McLean, Jr. (October 1, 1951) and Robert Brank McLean, II (November 1, 1954). Hays married Brenda Kay Riddle, and they have one daughter, Katherine Motlow McLean (June 9, 1986).

The McLean’s have been active in and lifelong members of the Methodist Church.
